A milestone for Latin music: Bad Bunny makes history being the first latin music artist to debut at the top.

In the 64-year history of the Billboard 200 chart, Billboard announced on Sunday that the Latin Superstar debuted at the top of the albums chart.

This is the first time ever the music industry has seen an all-Spanish album reach No. 1.

Puerto Rico native, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio known as Bad Bunny, whom in the past year has released three albums – with his most recent album titled, YHLQMDLG, debuting at No. 2 on the Latin music chart back in February. Bad Bunny (aka El Conejo Malo) was also crowned Spotify’s most streamed artist of 2020. A pioneer in his own right, he is the first Latin music artist to earn this title.

There have been other artists whom have tried their hand in “cross-over” projects yet none have reached the degree of achievement that El Ultimo Tour del Mundo has – successfully dominating Billboard’s albums chart sans English tracks. In 1995, the Estate of late Tejano music star Selena, posthumously released her final album Dreaming of you, which debuted at No. 1, but the project was a predominantly English album. Considering the achievements of Shakira’s 2005 release, Fijación Oral: Vol. 1 and Latin rock band Maná with their 2006 album, Amar es Combatir, both of which peaked at #4 on the music chart; at that time. It was until recently that those releases were the highest ranking Spanish albums to top the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Notably, we’re seeing an ever-growing music consumption by folks in Latin America, which is the fastest growing in the last five years. With a huge fanbase across the globe, it is without a doubt the lavish, romantic yet humble young man is just getting started. We have not seen Latin acts have the same distribution, airplay, music coverage, let alone presence in pop culture as we’ve seen in the past few years. With this milestone achievement, this is not only a win for Latin music artists currently in the industry but also for the ones to come.

Tune in to the album at the center of all conversations this week on Spotify or keep up with El Conejo Malo on Instagram, here.
